An Innovator for the Parking Industry:
In Memory of Terry McGann
As many of you already know, Terrence (Terry) McGann passed away on September 1, 2025, at the age of 84 in Minneapolis, Minnesota. To his friends and family, our team at TPN offers our deepest condolences. To the parking community, we want to share a bit about who Terry was and encourage you to let his hard work and tenacity inspire you as you take on the industry.
If you’re new to the parking industry, the name McGann might ring a bell. If you’re a seasoned parking professional, you know precisely who Terry is. I didn’t know Terry personally, but when my coworker mentioned the news of his passing, my response was, “Terry McGann as in Amano McGann?” To which she replied, “Yes, that McGann.”
Amano acquired Terry’s company, McGann Software Systems, in 2007, and Terry remained with the company until his retirement in 2010. McGann Software Systems—originally McGann Associates—got its start in 1982 as a parking equipment installer around the Minneapolis area. From then until its acquisition by Amano, the company provided installation and servicing for parking management software.
For those of us who are Millennials reading this, we may need to use our imagination here. The 1970s witnessed the invention of the microprocessor, which paved the way for the development of personal computers. Now imagine the pace at which technology was integrated into our industry—and how rapidly it has evolved since then. Put yourself in Terry’s shoes: he started a business focused on parking management software in the early days of the personal computer. That alone speaks to his tenacity, drive, and adaptability. When you consider how much his company had to evolve from 1982 to 2007 as the tech landscape changed, it’s no small feat.
I asked TPN’s founder, Clyde Wilson, about Terry. He knew him and said this about their first meeting: “He instantly impressed me because he understood the bigger picture [of the industry].” Clyde also shared that, because of our role as auditors, we saw firsthand the influence McGann had on the software side of things. Along with his team, he delivered one of the first major improvements in the quality of transaction data, something that significantly enhanced our ability to manage operations. That improvement continues to drive change in our industry today.
Thank you, Terry, for your hard work and dedication to improving the parking industry. It was a privilege to work with you, and it is an honor to remember you.
