Navigating the Unknown:
Why Clear Signage is Key for First-Time Parkers

A few weeks ago, I went to a coffee shop in a bustling retail and residential area and was reminded about the critical importance of clear communication with customers. When I arrived at the multi-level parking garage, I began the familiar search for an available spot. After circling the first level without finding a space, I expected to find a ramp leading to the second level. I made several laps around the first level looking for a space or the ramp and just when my hope began to falter, a spot opened.

Once inside the coffee shop, Chai Tea in hand, I settled into my work when two men sat down at the table next to me. Their conversation immediately caught my attention:

Man 1: “Did you have a hard time parking in the garage?”
Man 2: “Yeah! I kept driving around, looking for a way to get to the second level, but I never could find a way to get up there.”
Man 1: “I had the exact same problem! It was so weird.”

This exchange stuck with me since I had a similar experience. When I drove out of the garage later that day, I noticed a blue sign on the outside of the structure indicating access to the second level. It struck me that one of the unique features of this garage was that the access to the upper levels was on the exterior of the building, not inside.

At that moment, I realized the garage was not designed with the “first-time parker” in mind. At TPN, we often refer to the first-time parker as "Sally"—someone who has never visited the area before and has no prior experience with the garage or its distinctive layout. These unique features of a garage, whether related to its equipment, layout, or access points, can be particularly challenging for individuals like Sally, who are unfamiliar with the space.

For first-time parkers, a garage's unique qualities can create significant confusion, potentially affecting their experience and even disrupting the flow of traffic. This is why effective communication, especially through clear and well-placed signage, is essential. In garages with distinctive features, clear directional signage and alerts can help parkers navigate with ease. Providing guidance on the location of ramps, exits, and other unique elements can minimize confusion and ensure a smoother parking experience for everyone. Clear signage not only helps first-time parkers but also improves overall traffic flow and customer satisfaction.
