November 2024

This Veterans Day, TPN Consulting proudly honors our founder and president, Clyde Wilson, for his dedication and service, both in the United States Air Force and as an innovative leader in the parking industry. Clyde’s journey from an Air Force dispatcher to a trailblazer in parking solutions exemplifies his commitment to service and his relentless pursuit of excellence.

A Pathway to the Air Force

Clyde’s military journey began with an early fascination with aviation. At 14, he left Boy Scouts to join the Civil Air Patrol, immersing himself in the world of flying—a passion that would eventually lead him to the Air Force. In 1969, during a nationwide draft lottery, Clyde’s birthday was drawn, making him one of the first to be drafted. Rather than waiting, he enlisted in the Air Force in early 1970, ready to serve.

Cold War Service and Command in the Arctic Circle

After initial training at Travis Air Force Base, Clyde was stationed in Thule, Greenland, at the height of the Cold War. Thule was a strategic base equipped with massive radar systems that monitored the Arctic for missile threats, protecting the U.S. and its allies from potential attacks. Working closely with security operations, Clyde excelled in his role, earning commendations for his dedication and leadership. His outstanding performance led his commanders to request his transfer to Minot Air Force Base in North Dakota, where he faced a critical challenge: revitalize a department responsible for the movement and maintenance of Minuteman II missiles.

Rising to the Challenge

At just 22 years old, Clyde was tasked with overseeing 200 personnel in an environment marked by high stakes and heavy responsibility. Through sheer determination and a commitment to excellence, he turned the struggling department around, ultimately passing a rigorous inspection with flying colors. Reflecting on that time, Clyde credits his military experience with teaching him resilience and a drive to tackle challenging situations—qualities he would carry forward into his civilian career.

Transitioning to Civilian Life and Finding Purpose in Parking

Returning to the U.S. during the Vietnam era, Clyde, like many veterans, encountered a society that was not always welcoming of military service. Focused on building a future, he completed his college degree and soon found himself connected with Monroe Carroll, the visionary behind what would become the world’s largest parking company. The complexities and strategic challenges of parking drew Clyde in, eventually leading him to establish The Parking Network, Inc., and later TPN Consulting.

Clyde acknowledges that his time in the military shaped his leadership philosophy. “The most important experience from my time in the military was that it taught me who I was,” he reflects. The responsibility of overseeing security and logistics in high-stakes environments instilled in him the drive to embrace challenges—a trait that continues to propel his work at TPN Consulting.

Carrying Military Values Forward

At TPN, Clyde brings a spirit of integrity, responsibility, and a steadfast commitment to overcoming obstacles. He sees in his team the same potential he values in himself: “I believe what I learned most was that most of us enjoy and are capable of standing up to a challenge,” he explains. These principles, rooted in his military experience, guide his leadership approach and inspire those around him to reach new heights.

Reflecting on Veterans Day

Though military service wasn’t always celebrated in his generation, Clyde is heartened by today’s recognition of veterans. “Since 9/11, the value of veterans in the eyes of the public has changed,” he notes. Experiences like attending a John Williams performance at the Hollywood Bowl, where veterans stood in recognition of their service, have reminded him that his contributions mattered. For Clyde, this acknowledgment is bittersweet, a reminder of the sacrifices he and his peers made during challenging times.

A Message to Future Veterans

Clyde’s advice to veterans transitioning to civilian careers is grounded in self-awareness. “Your military service really tells you about yourself and that can prepare you more than anything for transitioning to civilian life,” he advises. For those entering the parking industry, he emphasizes the importance of resilience and adaptability—qualities he developed during his military career and has found invaluable throughout his life.

This Veterans Day, we honor Clyde Wilson not only for his service to our country but for the strength and leadership he brings to TPN Consulting every day. His journey is a testament to the enduring impact of military service and the values it instills in those who serve.
