A Turning Point for the Parking Industry?

Trina Tutor

May 2026

Every time I’ve been on LinkedIn lately, it feels like I’m in an old New York movie where newspaper salesmen are shouting, “Extra, extra, read all about it!” The headline? Uber’s purchase of SpotHero.

There’s no denying this is big news for the parking industry. Uber is a massive company, and SpotHero started as an industry startup. That alone makes this a moment worth paying attention to.

But beyond the headlines, I can’t help but wonder: what comes next?

I recently jumped on a call with an industry expert, TPN’s founder Clyde Wilson, to get his perspective. Clyde loves history, so our conversation started with talking about the development of a transportation card in the 1990s that could be used across different platforms. Then we moved on to what this purchase could really mean for our industry. Uber’s purchase of SpotHero could be the beginning of a transportation “super app”. Similar to the transportation card, but on a much larger scale. We also speculated about the role AI might play and how transaction fees could be implemented.

As the conversation went on, it became clear that those possibilities, while important, weren’t the most pressing issue.

What stood out most was the reality of our industry itself.

The parking industry is massive on a global scale, but at the same time, it’s a small world. That lends itself to fragmentation. It’s made up of a mix of large companies and a far greater number of small ones, each operating in their own space. One thing we have heard a number of times in conversations on expo hall floors is that we don’t work together as well as we could. One thing our team at TPN often says is that you can have two garages across the street from each other, but they will be nothing alike. That shows the level of fragmentation within our industry.

That fragmentation has always existed, but in a moment like this, it matters more.

Because when a company the size of Uber, which generates around $52 billion dollars in annual revenue, enters the space, it doesn’t just bring new technology or new ideas. It brings scale, influence, and the ability to shape how things are done. And if the rest of the industry isn’t aligned, it becomes much harder to respond, adapt, or have a voice in what comes next.

At TPN, we care deeply about the integrity of this industry, and that could be what’s at stake here.

This isn’t just about one acquisition. It’s about how an already divided industry responds to change.

Big shifts are coming, whether that’s through super apps, AI-driven tools, or evolving fee structures. The question is whether we face those changes as a collection of disconnected players, or as an industry willing to come together and shape its own future.

Because if we don’t, someone else will.

So, I’ll leave you with this: who is going to step up? Who is willing to lead, not just with innovation, but with integrity, collaboration, and a willingness to bring this industry together?
